More About Yoga

Yoga is not a religion - it's a philosophy!

Yoga is not a religion, nor does it claim to be a substitute for religion.  Although it requires no adherence to a dogma, it does urge the observance of the dual ethic of Yama and Niyama.   A sentence, which has always affected the ways I practice yoga, is B.K.S. Iyengar opening to Part 2 of Light on Yoga: "Practice of asanas (yoga positions) without the backing of yama and niyama (the philosophy of yoga) is mere acrobatics."  I have a strong belief that to truly learn yoga, a practitioner must study and familiarize themselves with all aspects of yoga philosophy, history, life style and pre-suppositions.
